What happened Events Before the Council of Constantinople?

by detha on August 3, 2009

After the Council of Nicea was over, the bishops returned to their homes and many churches continued to teach the way they had before the Nicene Creed was adopted. The text of the belief allowed the bishops to interpret in different ways.

Arianism, though defeated by imperial decree and belief, it quickly emerged once again and soon became the principal of the belief in the East. In three short years, Eusebius of Nicomedia, which was related to Constantine somehow, managed to get a hearing before the court of Constantine, to present their views once again. Constantine was sympathetic to this time Eusebio, Arius and allowed exiles to return and bishops in 328 AD, Eusebius of Nicomedia played an important role in the rest of the reign of Constantine. Two years after the death of Constantine, Eusebius was bishop of Constantinople to the death of the former bishop.

Now, the political atmosphere that developed between the Council of Nicea in 325 AD, and the Council of Constantinople in 381 AD, had much to do with the development and acceptance of Trinitarian orthodoxy. While Arianism dominated the theology of the empire, because the emperors of the acceptance and approval, Athanasius and others still fighting for the position of Nicea.

Athanasius knew that many of the bishops were reluctant to accept the terminology homoousios as it leaned toward modalism therefore came to accept the use of the term homoiousios, which means "same substance" to talk about the relationship of Son of the Father. This was a very significant step, as previously discussed that the use of homoiousios is as heretical as Arianism

In 362 AD, at a synod in Alexandria, Athanasius said that was acceptable to refer to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as a substance, if this is not a means of obliterating the distinction between the three persons, and was acceptable to speak of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as three substances, provided that this does not mean that the three by three separate Gods.

Athanasius died in 373 AD, just eight years before its approval of the orthodox belief in Constantinople. He did not live to see his victory, but his work continues at the Grand Cappadocians, Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nisa and Gregory of Nazianzus. Refining some of the terms of the Nicene Creed, and of Athanasius, to be more acceptable. Is your work that is seen in the synthesis of modern Trinitarian doctrine.

His major contribution was in using the words ousia and hypostasis. At Nicea, these terms are used synonymously, but the distinction between Cappadocians Tertuliano as there were more than 150 years before. They said that as a Divine ousia existed, but in three hypostasis. Now, in Latin called subsantia one and three personae. Do not allow the Greek word prosopon to be used in place of hypostasis, but not preferred because Sabellius been used for the purposes of demonstration or paper.

Athanasius was alive while he discussed the distinction between ousia and hypostasis Nicea because they do not differentiate. I do not mean three hypostasis because it too big of a distinction between people. You do not like the term because prosopon very little distinction. However, in the AD 362 synod did accept orthodox three hypostasis as language, but still prefer the old language of Nicea.

While three hypostasis is acceptable to some, many others saw as tritheism. Hebrews 1:3 is observed that taught that Jesus was the express image of God hypostasis, and not a second hypostasis. Now, Atanasio contributed to this misunderstanding by saying that all men have the same substance as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are of equal substance. Also, the Cappadocians made from this comparison of the trinity to three different men. As an example, as Peter, James and John were homoousios with one another, however, three people, so that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit homoousios with one another, but three people were same divine nature.

To address this misunderstanding, Gregory of Nyssa admitted that the language used was nothing more but an abuse of language. He said that, unlike the three men, each person of the Trinity is involved in the work of others, that every person in the Godhead worked together.

The Cappadocians continued use language subordinationistic century when speaking of the Son and Spirit. Others taught that we must have seen three, the Lord who gives the order, which creates the Word and the Spirit who confirms, and the natural goodness and the inherent Holiness and the royal dignity of the Father through the Spirit the only begotten. Therefore, until this time, some people felt it all figured out about the relationship of the Father to the Son, but when he arrived in the Holy Spirit, this was a big question mark.

So, here is the final result, the three Cappadocians taught that the head of one God exists in three coequal, coeternal, coessential people, and this truth is an incomprehensible mystery. There is a communion of substance, but Personhead distinction. This is a perfect trinity, inseparable, indivisible union, and people working together in all things. The only one of the distinguishing characteristics are the following persons: the Father is unbegotten, the Son is begotten (generated), and the Holy Spirit is taking place (spirated). The generation of the Son and the procession of the Holy Spirit, are mysteries, however. While persons are coequal and coeternal, the Father is in some sense the head and the origin. However, this discussion on the Holy Spirit will be discussed at the next council to be held in Constantinople.

Hello, my name is M. Lee Miller, I have a Ph.D. in Theology and a Ph.D. in Religious Studies. Being in ministry for almost 30 years, along with being a pastor of more than nine years, there have been many problems, situations to be faced as to what different people have to face in their lives. It was very difficult, with very satisfactory to have an opportunity to help a person to cope, to cope with problems, situations that sometimes arise in our world. If I had to live my life again, I must say that I still choose the position he holds today, that God has placed in me, and that is helping people through difficult times in this life of ours.
